Artificial Intelligence: The Technology Choice of Champions
Well, no. Harvard Business School professor, Karim Lakhani, puts it brilliantly when he says, “AI won’t replace humans. But humans with AI will replace humans without AI.” Think about that for a moment. Is it still a veiled threat? Or is it full of promise for the curious, the ambitious, and those with a willingness to learn? (Spoiler alert: option two here is the correct one.)
Think about your world as a finance professional. Spreadsheets and fully automated accounting packages are a part of everyday life. But it was not always so! People needed to come to terms with these technologies, familiarize themselves with them, and learn. So, you can look at AI as just another program we need to get acquainted with, start learning, start using, and become proficient at. But there are some differences, and it’s worth considering them.
Keep in mind that the central idea of AI as a personal and practical opportunity, not a threat. You can own this. Your organization is likely thinking right now about how to embrace AI at a strategic level. Leadership is hearing constant messages about how this technology can bring new levels of efficiency and effectiveness to every corner of the business, including the finance function. You don’t have to wait for this ‘just to happen to you’. You can play an active role in determining why and shaping how AI can be incorporated into your workplace, your team, and your own job. To make them all better.
One of the many exciting things about AI is that we’re all relative newcomers, even the experts. Pretty much everybody is on the ground floor, so there isn’t a long queue of seasoned experts to stand in line behind. Anybody with a little curiosity and some willingness to learn can quickly discover what this technology is in principle, and how it can positively impact them and their work in practice.
But don’t take too long!
The door to AI is open, but many are starting to stream through it. This, emphatically, is not a fad, and it’s not going to go away. Here’s a proof point. All four of the big global accounting firms have adopted AI to play a central role in their accounting and auditing. KPMG has stated publicly that ‘AI is going to fundamentally transform the audit process.’ This is NOT a fringe thing!
